Vladimir Putin drew attention to the uncontrolled growth of electricity consumption for cryptocurrency mining.
Mining farms are literally “pulling away” electricity in a number of regions of Russia.
Putin spoke on this topic at a meeting on economic issues. The meeting with representatives of the relevant departments was broadcast on the Kremlin website .
The President stated the need to take full control of the cryptocurrency mining process. The activities of mining farms must be transparent to the state.
The problem of uncontrolled mining of digital currencies has already made itself known in the Irkutsk region, Buryatia, and Transbaikalia.
The head of the Russian Federation emphasized that the issue is acute and threatens serious consequences for regions and specific settlements. Housing and communal services enterprises may face difficulties first and foremost.
According to the Ministry of Energy, mining consumes about 16 billion kilowatt-hours annually. This is 1.5% of the total electricity consumption in Russia.
Putin pointed out that the popularity of mining in the country is explained by relatively low prices for electricity and the mobility of equipment for mining digital currencies.
