However, there are moldy foods that can still be eaten after the damaged part has been cleaned. And these do not include sweets and jams at all.

Moldy foods safe to eat

Smoked ham

The appearance of small spots of mold on cured and smoked ham is a natural process.

Carefully scrape away any moldy areas with a knife and use the ham to cook something delicious on the grill or in the oven.

Hard fruits and vegetables

Fruits and vegetables that have a firm texture and a small proportion of water, such as carrots, celery or cabbage, can be eaten even if they are moldy in places. Cut off the moldy parts and put the vegetables in soup or borscht.

Dry-cured salami

The white stuff that grows on the salami rind is actually good mold that prevents other harmful bacteria and mold from growing on the product. Remove the rind and eat the salami without fear until the expiration date.

Hard cheeses

Mozzarella or cheddar cheese are hard cheeses that can become moldy if stored in damp areas of the refrigerator.

Even if they have mold on them, cut off the moldy parts and use the cheese to make pizzas, pies, or other oven-baked goodies.

Sweets and jams

Some housewives save the fruit jams they toiled over in the fall and do not throw them away if mold spots appear under the lid. Even if you have to throw away a lot of jam affected by mold, it is not recommended to eat it again.

The mold in these jars produces a mycotoxin that spreads throughout the contents of the jar and is hazardous to health.

Juicy fruits and vegetables

You should avoid strawberries, pears, berries, citrus fruits or moldy bananas. Do not risk eating them, even if you cut off the moldy parts. They already contain dangerous mold spores.

Bread and pastries

Bread and all baked goods, pastries, cakes, donuts, pies become dangerous when they become moldy. They must be thrown away immediately. They develop a kind of black mold that is barely visible to the naked eye, but which is harmful to health.

Walnuts and dried fruits

Moldy nuts, hazelnuts, dried apricots or prunes should not be eaten. They cannot be saved! They must be thrown in the trash or compost.

Dairy products, sliced or grated cheeses

Avoid moldy butter, cream, yogurt and soft cheeses. Their mold is sour and causes constant stomach pain, nausea and vomiting.
