Great Lent in 2024 lasts from March 18 to May 4.
However, before you dive headfirst into restrictions, it is important to understand how to approach the issue of abstinence from food correctly.
Basic mistakes
In its publication, Rospotrebnadzor listed the mistakes made by many people observing the fast.
Among them were:
- a sharp refusal to eat meat, which often results in weakness up to fainting, exacerbation of chronic diseases and other consequences;
- eating foods with “empty” calories, which are designed to satisfy the constant feeling of hunger;
- lack of variety in the diet, which, despite fasting, is quite possible.
Advice from Rospotrebnadzor
The agency advised adhering to the following rules during Lent:
- eat foods high in protein, such as tofu, legumes, buckwheat, etc.;
- don't be disdainful of "fish days";
- compensate for your carbohydrate needs with cereals and vegetables;
- When it comes to sweets, give preference to honey and fruits instead of “fast” carbohydrates;
- Don't shy away from vegetable fats and eat dishes with olive oil on those days when you can.
