The food additive carrageenan or E 407 can cause the development of chronic intestinal diseases, ulcers and increased blood sugar levels.

However, scientists do not yet know what effect carrageenan has on the risk of developing type 2 diabetes in people.

Associate Professor of the Department of Food Technology and Bioengineering at the Plekhanov Russian University of Economics Elena Myasnikova clarified her opinion about this additive in a conversation with REN TV .

She noted that E407 is widely used in various production areas. Most often, the additive is used in the food industry.

The food additive stabilizes and retains moisture well. Therefore, it is used in the production of confectionery and dairy products.

The bioengineer noted that E407 is an approved additive. According to the register, manufacturers have the right to use it in production.

At the same time, the specialist noted that the opinion about this supplement is far from ambiguous. The results of some studies indicate its negative impact on the gastrointestinal tract.

According to DZD researcher Professor Robert Wagner, consumption of carrageenan may disrupt the intestinal barrier function.

He also said that E 407 may also increase the risk of inflammatory diseases.
