Curtains are chosen when the main room is already ready and decorated, and this issue must be approached with the utmost responsibility.
Correctly selected in color, they can visually expand the space around them, make it lighter or, conversely, darken it, giving the room a cozy, festive or luxurious look.
Should you choose based on the color of the surrounding walls or take into account the upholstery of the furniture? There will probably never be a precise answer to this question, says Yulia Tychino .
If you are trying to save money, choose based on the upholstery of your furniture: wallpaper or other wall coverings in your apartment are changed quite often, while expensive, high-quality curtains will serve you for quite a long time.
If you don’t plan to save a lot, then feel free to choose curtains that match the color of the wall covering.
But even in this case there are some nuances.
In small rooms, it is better to select them to match the main wall covering: the contrast in the design will visually reduce the space.
One trick will help to maintain a single space without the color "merging" of curtains and walls: it consists in choosing these fabric products not in the same tone as the color of the walls. But choose, for example, a slightly darker one.
Don't forget the main rule of combination: warm shades go with warm ones, cold ones go with cold ones;
If the window decoration is double - tulle and curtains, then one of these elements should match the background color of the walls.
For example, if the color of the walls is green, then it is appropriate to choose greenish curtains and white tulle or greenish tulle and bright green curtains.
If there are quite a lot of different objects in the room, then the best solution would be to match the curtains to the color of some large object: a sofa, a carpet (by the way, you can read about the relevance of the carpet here), and so on.
If you are a little afraid of making a mistake with your choice, then feel free to buy curtains in neutral shades: brownish and beige curtains will always fit into any room and any interior.
If you decide to choose products with a pattern, then be sure to buy them in accordance with the features of the room and its decor.
If the walls are narrow, then curtains with vertical stripes will help to expand the surrounding space a little; horizontal stripes, in turn, will visually lengthen the wall; This is the best choice for rooms with ceilings up to two meters and small windows; It is advisable to choose fabrics with a geometric pattern so that they repeat the wallpaper pattern.
Ideally, a small pattern on the wallpaper should be complemented by a large and contrasting print on the curtains, and patterned bright wallpaper will look great paired with plain curtains.
In the bedroom, curtains perform an important function - they protect from bright light and create a relaxing atmosphere. Calm or pastel tones will be appropriate here: soft greenish, gray-blue, creamy gray and others.
In a child's room, these items should be of fairly natural shades - too bold colors will irritate the child's psyche. Designers recommend bright fabrics, a combination of 2-3 pure colors, orange, greenish and yellow.
For the kitchen, curtains are usually chosen that match the interior of this room: curtains in delicate shades, checkered or striped, or with a bright print are ideal; plain ones are also appropriate, especially those that match the color of the kitchen, as well as two- or three-color ones.
