“I want a hedgehog!”: what you need to know before getting a decorative animal — advice from experienced hedgehog breeders

The African hedgehog is an unpretentious animal that many people who dream of having a little friend in their apartment decide to get.

However, there are some things you need to know before your desired pet appears in your home.

Arrangement of the cage

The African hedgehog cage should contain:

• shelters;
• "toilet" corner;
• drinking bowl and feeders;
• wheel.

The cage itself should be as spacious as possible. It is recommended to buy a dwelling at least 70 centimeters long.

The hedgehog leads a nocturnal lifestyle, therefore, it cannot do without activity, which it can make up for in the wheel.

Please note that the toilet corner should be cleaned daily, and the animal's feeders and water bowl should always be clean.

Feeding

African hedgehogs have a weak liver, and therefore it is not recommended to keep the animals exclusively on dry food.

Their diet should include:

• lean meat and fish, including day-old chicks and newborn boneless mice;
• seedless fruits and vegetables;
• baby food without additives;
• insects such as silkworms, crickets, etc.
