How to train a cat to use the toilet
When getting a cat, the first problem that arises for any person is that the pet will go to the toilet wherever it wants, and not in the place assigned to it.
The problem is not only the constant cleaning of the cat's favorite place, but also unpleasant odors, as well as walls, wallpaper, and furniture scratched by claws.
Every owner dreams of their cat going to the toilet. But how to teach your pet to do this?
To begin with, you need to purchase a litter box for training cats to use the toilet, or else a litter box with a cut-out bottom, from any veterinary store.
First of all, you need to train your cat to go to the toilet in this tray, and not in any other place. For this purpose, there are also fillers, special products and sprays with the necessary aroma to attract the cat.
If the animal walks by, you can dip a napkin or toilet paper in the cat's excrement and put it in the same tray.
When the animal gets used to the litter box and will only go to the toilet in it, you can gradually begin to train it to use the toilet.
Find a solid, stable object at home, about 5-10 centimeters thick. It should be approximately the size of the cat litter box in length and width, or slightly larger. It can be a small box, a piece of wood, or even your least favorite book.
Place this item under the litter box. Make sure the box is stable and won't tip over if your pet steps on it.
If the cat went to the toilet in this tray on a small podium, then you are on the right track. When the pet gets used to it, put another small object under the tray, again up to 10 cm thick.
Once your pet has reached this height, gradually continue to build the podium up to the height of the rim of your toilet.
It is important that this podium is as stable as possible during its growth. If the cat falls off it during use, it may be frightened and cause it to refuse to use this place for its needs in the future.
So, you have achieved that your pet can go to the toilet at the height you need, namely at the height of the toilet.
Now you need to move the tray itself to the rim of the toilet, but you can leave the podium for now, as the cat will jump on it out of habit in search of its toilet.
Let the animal get used to going to the toilet on the toilet, but for now in its own tray. As soon as the habit is established, we begin to dismantle the tray itself. This is why you initially needed a tray with a cut-out bottom.
You need to cut gradually, starting from the very center. This is done so that the cat is not afraid of falling into the toilet while doing its business. As soon as it gets used to such a toilet, cut out the next tier of the tray.
As a rule, there are 3 to 5 such tiers in the tray. After all the tiers are cut out, your pet is practically already going to the toilet, all that remains is to remove the remains of his tray from the toilet.
Training a cat to use the toilet in this way can take several months, depending on the character and habits of your pet.
Throughout the training, it is important to encourage the cat when it has mastered the “new heights”, it is necessary to monitor whether it is comfortable and safe for it to climb up to its toilet, sit on it and descend back.
Do not rush to raise the level of the podium or cut out the next tier from the tray, the cat should get used to it and go to its current toilet without fear.
Cats are very picky animals, if they feel uncomfortable or unsafe, they can simply reject this toilet and choose a new one at their own discretion.
And you, sadly, will have to start all the training from the very beginning. But with consistent and correct training, your pet will learn to go to the toilet directly into the toilet, which will make your life much easier.
