Common Mistakes in Bathing and Brushing Dogs: What Pet Owners Forget

Many owners make typical mistakes that can negatively affect the coat and health of their pet.

The first common mistake is using a shampoo that is not intended for dogs.

Human shampoo has a different pH balance and can dry out the animal's skin and cause irritation. It is better to choose a special shampoo for dogs of the desired coat type.

Another mistake is to wash your dog too often. For most breeds, bathing 1-2 times a month is enough. Excessive frequency damages the protective layer of the skin and can lead to dryness and itching.

Many people underestimate the importance of drying the coat properly after bathing. Leaving a dog with wet coat can provoke colds. It is necessary to thoroughly dry the coat with a hairdryer or towel.

Another common mistake when bathing is using too hot water. This can cause burns to the dog's skin. The optimal water temperature for bathing is about 37 degrees, slightly higher than the pet's body temperature.

Many owners forget to brush their pets' fur after bathing. Wet fur gets tangled and forms mats.

Regular brushing is necessary to prevent tangles and distribute sebum along the length of the hair. A special comb with dense, strong teeth is needed for brushing.

Another mistake is combing with a too hard brush, unsuitable for the type of hair. This can damage the hair structure, lead to breakage and loss. The brush should match the length, thickness, texture of the hair of a particular breed.

When combing, do not pull the fur or use excessive force. This injures the skin and causes discomfort to the animal. Combing should be smooth, neat, without sudden movements.

Many owners do not pay enough attention to combing hard-to-reach areas - behind the ears, under the arms, on the stomach. This is where tangles most often form, which over time tangle into tight knots. Regularly comb the entire surface of the body.

Combing dry, dirty fur is also a mistake. This leads to hair damage and skin irritation. Before combing, the fur should be clean and slightly damp.

You can't brush wet fur right after bathing - the hair is easily pulled out. Let the fur dry for 15-20 minutes. It is also not recommended to brush the fur before bathing - it is better to do it after to remove the remaining shampoo.

It is important to change combs regularly, wash them with soap, wipe them with a disinfectant. Otherwise, dirt and parasites will accumulate in the bristles, which will be transferred back to the animal's fur.

By following these simple guidelines when bathing and brushing, you can avoid common mistakes and ensure your pet has healthy, well-groomed fur.
